Invasion of Sleep is an experiential documentation of the mind as it is introduced to a series of unfamiliar emotional experiences activated by sleep deprivation from a newborn child.
The palette of sound was curated by sampling sounds from devices that aided our son with sleeping. These devices included a white noise machine, baby monitor, shusher, fan, space heater and HVAC. The recordings were treated in Logic and various iPad apps to achieve the desired color of sound.
A quote from Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club was the inspiration for the sound treatments. “When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep, and you're never really awake. With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy.” A precedent was set to try and imitate what sounds would sound like if they were treated like an image that had been photocopied over and over again.
The tracks were mixed in a two passes process. The first pass was mixed in Logic using a pair of 30 year old Aiwa headphones and the second pass was a mix of the first pass mix in Mastering using a pair of Apple EarPods.
The end result is a lo-fi ambient EP expressed through four movements. Each movement is a reflection of our state of mind as we transitioned through various moments of adapting to our new life.
It is important to note that the artist did not play a single note or instrument on this album. All original sounds came from field recordings.
